"How To Humble Myself"

October 09, 2022 | Pastor Charles P. Akins, Sr.

Passage: Proverbs 16:19

Introduction:

Humility is not a popular topic this day and age. In fact, it could be said that the opposite is true! Pride rules the decisions of most people, not humility. Thus the expression, “It’s a dog-eat-dog world!” Cannibalism in actions is expected of any “normal’ person trying to achieve.

Proposition:

Christ said that we are to do the exact opposite of this! Which do you value peace in this life, and eternal rest with God, or the upheaval of the satanic realm and destruction in Hell? If you choose Christ, choose humility.

Body:

This topic comes up pretty frequently, right! Because God is calling us to turn from the narratives of this world! They are evil at their core, and they will taint your soul!

We must force our minds to think about this subject and bring our bodies under subjection of God’s Spirit!

There is an old saying: “You find out who a person is when they are the one with all of the power!” Still another, “If you really want to know who a person is then catch them when no one is looking!”

Jesus came here with all of the power! At any point he could have destroyed the earth, called down angels, whatever he chose as a measure to demonstrate his power.

The Bible tells us that he, instead, gave up his mortal existence to save us.

“But he was wounded for our transgressions.”, Jesus then, is the epitome of humility!

True power is not displayed in mastery of another person. That, in fact, is true weakness! True power is showing love and compassion to someone that cannot stop you from destroying them if you choose to!

Love is a display of power and not destruction. Destruction is an action that is taken by one who is simply incapable of building anything!

If I cannot truly build, then I must be meant to destroy! It takes far less time to destroy something than it does to build anything!

How long does it take to build up a good, positive reputation? Yet, in one moment of weakness, indiscretion, or betrayal a person’s reputation can be tarnished forever.

So then, how does one go about humbling oneself before God?

Step #1 – Desire to humble oneself must exist

  • Why do I wish to do this? (Your Answer)
    • To hear from and please God hopefully
  • How /who will this benefit?
    • Me and all those in my sphere of influence
  • What is the goal? (Not same as why)
    • To see myself realistically as I am (As God sees me)

Step #2 – Study the Gospel (Jesus’ Life/Character)

  • What was he like?
    • Selfless
  • What was important to him?
    • God’s Kingdom on Earth
  • What was his focus?
    • Salvation of man
  • How did he live/operate/function?
    • Sacrificing for the needs of others
  • What were his habits?
    • Teaching, praying, fasting, living for relationship with God

Step #3 – Compare my life to Jesus’ life

  • Am I thankful?
  • Do I express, or communicate thanksgiving?
  • Do I make an effort to:
    • Love (Family 1st, and then others)
    • Forgive everyone
    • Give
    • Intercede
    • Show compassion
  • What have I suffered for anyone?
  • Do I appreciate the Crucifixion?
  • Do I complain too much?
  • Do I seek my Heavenly Father enough?
  • Where have I truly failed?
    • What am I struggling with?
    • What have I not given up yet?
    • Where is my faith?

Step #4 – Compare my present life to:

  • What my life was at its worse
  • What my life could be at its worse
  • What life should be due to my failures, or short comings as a person

Step #5 – Recognize how much God has really done for me

  • I was not given what I deserved
  • I have much more than I deserve
  • Everything I have was given to me
    • Physical - Good looks, brains, strength (genetics/still God)
    • Money, property, etc (God allowed/gave) family/self-made
    • Life, health, strength (mental,..) God gives/sustains
    • Employment, resources also given by God

Step #6 – Understand why I am truly nothing without God

  • All God has to/had to do was say no!
  • All that I have/am was provided to me
  • God is sovereign/has rule over all actions to permit/deny
  • One turn in your life could change the course god/bad

We should use the power, influence, or resources to help others. The world today would be a much better place if people sought to help others, rather than to dominate them.

Everyone wants to be the “Top Guy” by having more than anyone else, instead of being the one that helps the most!

Conclusion:

Any person desiring a good relationship with God must learn about God through humility.

We can learn who we are too God, and what a relationship with him is truly like when we are obedient!

God is God, and he doesn’t have our ways or tendencies. Our worship of God can’t go to his head because he doesn’t operate in pride!

If God isn’t proud, why should you be! He created everything, what did you do?
